Let’s Beat the Heat With Project Cool Breeze
It’s not summer yet, but we know that the summer heat will soon be upon us, and the need to come to the aid of many in our community who suffer from the heat will be great. To insure that we are prepared to meet the needs of the elderly and less fortunate in our community, The Honorable Wendell Gilliard and Ms Carolyn Brown from the City of Charleston’s Weed and Seed Program recently hosted the Kick-Off Meeting for the Steering Committee of Project Cool Breeze on March 25, 2008.

What is Project Cool Breeze? In 1999, Councilman Wendell Gilliard began a project to provide new fans and air conditioners to elderly persons, sixty years of age or older, in the Tri-County area in response to a number of heat-related deaths. With the growing number of seniors, particulary those on low fixed incomes, it is more important than ever that the community and local businesses support Project Cool Breeze.
How Can You Help? You can help in two ways...by donating a new fan or air conditioner at one of the specified donation locations or by making a tax-deductible monetary contribution that will help purchase fans and air conditioners. Donations can be made at any time during the year, but the greatest need is from May to September. During this time, air conditioners and fans are distributed to elderly persons in need. To make a monetary donation, make checks payable to: City of Charleston Project Cool Breeze 116 Meeting Street Charleston, SC 29401
To donate a newly purchased fan and/or air conditioner, drop off at one of the following locations: Charleston Water System 103 St. Phillip St., Charleston Lowe's West Ashley location only
